164: seattle | palouse | coulee | rainier: there & back again________10 June, 2015

hello sir, madam, or thing,

the summary of the summary of the summary is: people are a problem. okay, now i’ve gotten all my HHGTTG GATTACA ABBA BRB LOL ASDFs out, i can focus on the new and exciting things. you know what’s exciting but not at all new?

YES. the puget sound.

this and much more on future episodes of … this blog! there will be pictures of sheep. there will be pictures of mountains. there will be pictures of “cool but gritty neighborhoods” that are “played out.” there may or may not be pictures of angora rabbits. oh, and you should go check out okey panky on 6/15. because that’s when my new minicomic will be up! it’s called “MEAT.” obviously you should go there before then because they have lots of other cool people writing things like hey sharma shields or stephen dixon or yumi sakugawa, but i just thought i’d mention that.

also i am going to grad school for fiction … and getting paid to do it. these are words that i never thought would be coming out of my word-hole, but there they are! i will really really miss all the great people and things and buildings at and surrounding ARO. i’ve been hugely lucky to spend almost four years working at one of the best firms in new york city. and i don’t think this is the end for me & architecture; more like a coda — just for whatever that’s worth.

other current projects: some prose stories, possible return to certain comics endeavors, editing all mah trip photos, attempting to reenter currency in my correspondences. hope y’all are doing well!

102: go curate________16 May, 2012

and now, because real-live human event happenings are saying these things in my real, live human life … contexts in which the word “curate” should never be used:

  • conversation (“how can we curate a conversation that addresses that dialectic in practice?”)
  • publications (“journal / magazine / quarterly curated by…” no, no, wait! there’s a word for it. it starts with an “e”. edible? edict? huh.)
  • social media (q: “aren’t we kind of curating an identity through facebook?”) (a: no.)
  • any extension of your person (“i’d like to, but i need to curate my fingernails.”)
  • …or clothing (in fact, any aspect of your personal appearance is off limits. sorry.)
  • other stuff (just … if you’re not sure, use another word. preeze?)

i have a bunch of photos to put up, but clearly i’d rather be complaining about weird, faux-intellectual bastardizations of english.  no, but really, i’ll put them up soon.

…but seriously.

an exciting [portfolio] event!________16 April, 2011

well, ladies and gents, it’s a very exciting moment.  school’s out–forever! i’ll definitely miss my friends of–can you believe it?–six years.  they’ve taught me a lot and i’ll be sad not to see them every day.  i hope we’ll all keep in touch.  we had our final, ah, final review on thursday (and again on friday as one juror was a bit day late).  compared to the rest of the reviews i’ve had this semester, it went pretty well.  our jurors were also excellent–particularly incisive was the commentary of two principals of the paris-local firm kilo, linna choi and tarik oualalou.  they presented that wonderfully elusive admixture of criticality, humor, and optimism that can really carry a jury.  their work is also pretty exciting, so check it out! and of course, with the last day of school (ostensibly forever) comes the terrifying moment of the search for work.  i’m looking at a few firms in europe already, but the states are hardly out of the question.  perhaps more excitingly, i’ve finished work on my brand-spankin’ new barch graduate portfolio!  i hope you enjoy and (as i haven’t printed yet), any comments (positive or otherwise) are extremely welcome.  just shoot me an email.  in the meantime, i’ll be tuning up the work section of the site a bit to ready it for this new addition. next up before a triumphant (though possibly temporary) return to the us of a? an ecstatically exciting trip to amsterdam, copenhagen, oslo, bergen, and (potentially) belfast, delft, goteborg, rotterdam and a few other places.  everybody wish me luck! (…mostly in retrieving my eurail pass from DHL at this point)
