119: buke and gase and bowery________9 February, 2013

i was pretty lucky to get into buke and gase’s only hometown show on their current tour — and i was a long way from disappointed. also in attendance: ahleuchatistas and STATS. my review is up on twhp, but i’ve dropped it in below the photos anyway (and unedited to boot!):

with the possible exception of STATS, it’s almost impossible to tack genres onto any of the performances witnessed at the bowery ballroom on wednesday night. wonderfully consonant in their complete disregard for musical convention, each act built on the next until buke and gase finally took the stage to an ecstatic full house. even in the middle of a grueling tour, the band’s enthusiasm for the venue and the home crowd (and, if they’re like us, the music) was hard to miss. when dyer comes out beaming with her beloved buke, it’s hard not to follow suit.

buke and gase, after minimal introductions, played an thrillingly characteristic show of technical mastery (probably the phrase of the night all around), riveting enthusiasm, and punchy, repetitive riffs and jags. it’s especially fun to watch the silent language exchanged between the arone (ecstatic, effusive) and the aron (stoic, focused). vocals and instrumentation could be typified as “a test jet with wheels accelerating into a series of hairpin turns”, only with distortion and ringmods. it’s really hard to look away, in the best of ways.

ahleuchatistas and STATS are deserving of special mention as well, of course. if you’re looking for extended-play, technically spotless, slightly math-infused metal, you should look no further than STATS. ahleuchatistas, meanwhile, played a set in which songs are less discrete objects, than constructed, developable geometries that bleed endlessly into one another, with melodies and rhythms hauntingly presenting and vanishing at a moment’s notice. in terms of stage presence, perlowin and oslance could hardly be more different, with the former a hairsbreadth from shoegaze and the latter somewhere between “spectacular freak-out” and “situationist artform”. don’t miss them.
